How to Reset Your Web Browser

There are often times where adware and malware programs hijack your web browser. This typcially includes adding extensions and add-ons as well as changing your home page, new tab page and search provider. In addition some forms of malware will modify various browser settings which will lower your security level. Please use the instructions below to manually 'fix' or reset your web browser settings.

Reset Google Chrome

Chrome gives you the option to reset your browser settings in one click. Resetting your browser settings will reset the unwanted changes caused by installing other programs. However, your saved bookmarks and passwords will not be cleared or changed. When using the reset button the default search engine, homepage, default startup tabs, new tab page, pinned tabs, extensions and cookies will be reset.
To reset Chrome settings:
  1. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu  on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Show advanced settings and find the "Reset browser settings” section.
  4. Click Reset browser settings.
  5. In the dialog that appears, click Reset.

Reset Mozilla Firefox

The reset feature for Firefox fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs. All of your Firefox settings and personal information are stored in a profile folder. The reset feature works by creating a new profile folder for you while saving your important data. (Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named "Old Firefox Data." If the reset didn't fix your problem you can restore some of the information not saved by copying files to the new profile that was created.)
To reset Firefox settings:
  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help sub-menu and select Troubleshooting Information. If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting information page.
  2. Click the Reset Firefox... button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
  3. To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.
  4. Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open.

Reset Internet Explorer

You can reset Internet Explorer settings to return them to the state they were in when Internet Explorer was first installed on your PC. This can be useful for troubleshooting problems that might be caused by settings changed after installation. Resetting Internet Explorer isn't reversible, and all previous settings are lost after the reset.
To reset IE settings:
  1. Close all Internet Explorer and Explorer windows that are currently open.
  2. Start Internet Explorer. (If you are running Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, start Internet Explorer from the desktop. Changing your settings will affect both Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer that you start from the desktop.)
  3. On the Tools menu, tap or click Internet Options. If you don't see the Tools menu, press Alt.
  4. In the Internet Options window, tap or click the Advanced tab.
  5. Tap or click Reset. (If you're using Windows Internet Explorer 6, click Restore Default.)
  6. When Internet Explorer finishes applying the default settings, tap or click Close, and then tap or click OK.
  7. Exit and then start Internet Explorer.
